Cultural Competence and Dementia - 3 CEU Event

Program Description:
The issues of culture, health disparities, and ethnic diversity will be described within the context of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The prevailing medical culture within formal care settings will be contrasted with a person-centered approach to dementia care. Dementia will also be discussed from the perspectives of two racial and ethnic populations that are disproportionately affected by the disease. Differences in how Latino and African American elders and their families view dementia will be explained and implications for research and care will be discussed.

This free program will award 3.0 CE clock hours to Illinois Social Workers, Professional Counselors, Nurses and Nursing Home Administrators, and satisfies the Illinois Social Worker 3-hour Cultural Competence licensure requirement.
