Understanding the Surrogate Decision Makers - CEU Event

Wednesday 03/14/2018 08:30 AM - 10:30 AM
Belmont Village of Oak Park
1035 Madison Street, Oak Park, IL 60302

This session will discuss the types of decision-makers that Illinois law recognizes to make decisions on behalf of adults: agents, guardians, and health care surrogates. Before you can successfully work with these decision-makers you need to (1) understand that the decision maker is legally entitled to make the decision at issue, and (2) know the extent of a decision-maker’s authority and what standards he or she should apply when making decisions on behalf of a disabled adult. This presentation will discuss these issues, and more, along with questions commonly asked of elder law attorneys.

Presenter: Michaela P. Franco, MA, JD.
Ms. Franco, who also has a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology, has been licensed to practice law since 2006. Prior to joining the elder law firm of Dutton Casey & Mesoloras in September of 2015, she practiced for nine years with the Cook County Public Guardian. This experience provided her with a broad background in probate matters, litigation, and client counseling. Her clinical background also provides her with a unique perspective on elder law and capacity issues
